Hi Andrew,
Thank you for this question.
Yes, you can run SOQL queries inside the IDE.
You should create the separate file of this type using the next way: in the context menu of the Solution Explorer select 'Add' -> 'New Item...' -> 'Query.soql', click 'Add'.
After the code is specified for a SOQL query, please click 'Execute SOQL' on the top of the file.
The documentation for this topic (and for other ones) is preparing and will be available soon. We are working on it just now.

More of then, what about any kind of Object browser, sObjects field viewer, etc?

Thank you for your comments.
Currently, there is no ability to comment in the SOQL editor. This feature request is already present on our agenda.
I'm afraid I cannot tell you when exactly this will be implemented inside the IDE.
As for the Object browser, our developers are working on this right now, and this functionality will be present in the next version of The Welkin Suite that will be available for you the next week. The Object browser will be presented as Schema Explorer for objects.
